WENT ABSOLUTELY FANTASTICALLY! All 15 of the campers had tons of fun throughout the week and went home as stronger chess players. Campers were split into two groups and all spent equal time with coaches Keaton, Craig, and Josh. The typical day at camp consisted of two morning lectures (1-1.5 hours long), lunch break and free time, a training game, individualized analysis of the training game with a coach, followed by an afternoon lecture. Near the end of the camp, campers were also given a treat with guest lectures by IM John Watson and Udo Herges. See more in the picture section!
THE THIRD SAN DIEGO SURFERS CHESS CAMP (2019)
Our 2019 Camp was phenomenal! We tried having it in the LA area (Whittier) for the first time which worked really well. Kele Perkins was a great host and graciously provided his classroom where he works as a teacher. Keaton, Craig and Josh were back in action as the main instructors, and recently crowned International Master Annie Wang stopped by to give a simul (played against all the students at once.)
THE FIRST SAN DIEGO SURFERS CHESS CAMP (2017)
was a HUGE success. We as instructors had a blast and we hope that everyone who came had loads of fun too. There were a total of 4 instructors and 14 kids, with 6 of them rated above 1500 USCF and even one expert (2000+)! The kids were split up into 3 groups based on strength so that no one was bored or struggling to keep up with the material. Here is a group photo with instructors Josh and Keaton!
